Monasteries linked by old village paths, forest on the plateau, and long ridges for multi-day trips. Distances and climbs are measured along the actual paths on the map, with elevation from a terrain model.
Old footpaths link the two UNESCO monasteries across the side gorge of the Akner stream, passing Kayan fortress. Expect a steep descent and climb; follow a GPX track, as waymarking is patchy.
The national long-distance trail crosses the province from the Shirak border via Stepanavan and the Dzoraget canyon into the Debed canyon and on to Alaverdi, then climbs onto the ridges towards Tavush.
